How I found my next dream job
All it took was an email 2 years ago, persistent follow up, a superday of 9 hours of interviews and a little luck.
👋 Hey, it’s Sundar! Welcome to a paid subscriber only article of experiMENTAL: a weekly newsletter on B2C Marketing & data science how-to guides, frameworks, and stories from 15 years including early Uber. Free tier subscribers can continue reading for limited preview of the article.
My new dream job
In case you missed it (fresh off the LinkedIn press), I’ve joined Bounce as their Head of Data responsible for superpowering our growth efforts with all things data.
Note: Bounce is the largest network of luggage storage with partners in over 4,000 cities. If you find yourself traveling and need to safely and securely drop off your bags for a few hours or days, check us out. Shameless 🔌 over.
I won’t get into why I joined them in this post (that’s for another day) but I did want to share my story about how I found this job. I think it’s important to share as there are many people still looking for roles post layoffs and hopefully this inspires someone to take action. In full transparency, this took 2 years of reaching out, shameless outreach, and a bit of luck, so if you’re here for a quick solution to finding a job, you’re in the wrong place.
Act 1: The Intro
Finding an opportunity nowdays is brutal because demand (people looking) far outstrips supply. The traditional funnel of applying on Linkedin or applying on career sites isn’t going to work. The best avenue to finding something continues to be through your network.
When I first started consulting, I only wanted to work with consumer marketplaces because that’s what I loved from my time at Uber. Historically, there were a lot of consumer marketplaces popping up but they’ve dwindled significantly in the past few years. Bounce was one of a handful that seemed to have some momentum and I just happened to have a friend who knew the founder.
Here’s the email introing us

We were able to chat and had a good conversation.
Act 2: The chase
Like any good consultant, I followed up. They responded. And we went back and forth a few times. Here’s the timeline of our communications:
